Fujoshi

Mattie Brice: Queering the hell out of everything.
@xGalatea In the anime community, I believe we would call you "fujoshi".
@the_patches And what does that mean? :P
@xGalatea Translated it means "rotten girl", but it refers loosely to rapacious B/L shippers and yaoi fangirls.
@the_patches @xGalatea I also thought it applied to those women that go out to buy the latest non-BL otome game too?
@maverynthia @xGalatea It's a broad definition? I'd ask @carouselcarouse for a more accurate taxonomy.
@the_patches @xGalatea @carouselcarouse might @gabeglick also know, he posts articles about that stuff. :3
@maverynthia @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick Fujoshi can also refer to otaku interested in other things; trains, weapons, old guys etc.
@maverynthia @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick The point is an obsession (sexual or otherwise) and the insinuation of having no life.
@carouselcarouse @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick Do men get such a branding? Or is it just "otaku"?
@maverynthia @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick otaku, basically I mean, they're comparable only there's a sexist connotation in 'rotten'.
@maverynthia @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick I was under the impression that the rotten implies to women no guy would want to marry.
@carouselcarouse @the_patches @xGalatea @gabeglick True, but any kind of man is marriable >.<
@maverynthia @the_patches @xgalatea @carouselcarouse seems to know much better than I do. All I know is JP Wikipedia says they're yaoi fans.
@maverynthia @carouselcarouse @the_patches @xgalatea Although interestingly enough it also says there's a male equivalent, fudanshi (腐男子).
@gabeglick @maverynthia @the_patches @xgalatea It certainly does go both ways, though fujoshi was in common use before fudanshi.
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xgalatea Makes sense. And apparently fudanshi refers to male yaoi fans. Why is that rotten? >:(
@gabeglick @maverynthia @the_patches @xgalatea otaku/fujoshi/fudanshi is insulting because it suggests a failure to conform to society.
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xgalatea True, but using "rotten" for that, even it's been reclaimed by fans, is just terrible.
@gabeglick @carouselcarouse @the_patches @xmattiebrice So do they like yaoi games too xD? I take it those guys play bishoujo games all day?
@maverynthia @carouselcarouse @the_patches @xmattiebrice All I know is JPWiki says they enjoy yaoi works so I'd presume that includes games.
@maverynthia @carouselcarouse @the_patches @xmattiebrice No idea how much overlap there is with video game otaku and/or NEETs though.
@gabeglick @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice The NEET thing seems shadowy because it's more acceptable for women to be dependant.
@gabeglick @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice I assume there are still stereotypical provider responsibilities foisted on fudanshi.
@carouselcarouse @gabeglick @maverynthia @xGalatea Wow. This turned into quite a discussion while I was climbing!
@maverynthia @gabeglick @xGalatea @carouselcarouse is right, though. Those terms are pejorative despite any attempt at reclamation.
@the_patches @maverynthia @gabeglick @xGalatea I won't deny I sort of enjoy the sleaze that comes with it, but not everyone would.
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice My uneducated guess is that men who are openly fudanshi don't get married unless
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice they give it up, in which case I don't think they're expected to be responsible.
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice Japan seems to have a very narrow view of acceptable relationships and marriage,
@carouselcarouse @maverynthia @the_patches @xmattiebrice which may be a big reason why young ppl care less and less about sex and marriage.
@the_patches @maverynthia @xMattieBrice @carouselcarouse character for "rotten" to describe ppl who enjoy homoerotic works, yeah… Not cool.
@the_patches @maverynthia @xMattieBrice @carouselcarouse Arguing about the history of "faggot" is one thing, but when you use an unambiguous
@the_patches @maverynthia @xMattieBrice @carouselcarouse (also, after thinking it over I'm not sure homoerotic is the right term there?)
@gabeglick I think the "rotten" refers more to other factors as @carouselcarouse mentioned but you're certainly right.
@gabeglick The association of fujoshi with BL works is akin to the association of otaku with lolicon.
@the_patches And at least according to what I read today it seems to be even more widespread among popular perception than that.
@the_patches And yeah otaku is not a flattering term either, but if "rotten" is really associated so strongly with BL fans that seems worse.
@the_patches I don't know, maybe as an outsider I'm reading too much into it, but it really seems like a severely pejorative term.
@gabeglick It's strange because on this side of the ocean we've reclaimed them to some extent? Otaku is/was also severly pejorative in Japan
@gabeglick I hope @xMattieBrice realizes that I didn't mean it pejoratively. Chalk that one up to foot-in-mouth.
@the_patches Very true, and I'm not saying anyone who wants to call themselves those shouldn't be any means. I know they're different there.
@the_patches For all I know they've been reclaimed positively here too (though even if they have I doubt it's to nearly the same extent).
