WWDC 2011
Published by Manton Reece (@manton) —
Looking forward to WWDC as a software-only event. I'd be quite happy to not hear anything about iOS 5 until the keynote.
As WWDC sells out more quickly, I wonder if attendance leans toward indies and small companies. Hurts for folks needing management approval.
@pmbuko Yep, but you're leaving money on the table at only 99 cents. @lapcat had the idea for a $100 WWDC wake-up call service. :-)
Phil Schiller is tweeting about Matchbox Twenty. They also topped my survey about who this year's WWDC beer-bash band is. Repent ye.
We'd like to remind you there's only 50 days until WWDC. So you should probably start lining up for the keynote soon.
For this year's WWDC Dunk Tank, I nominate the person who decided that the "@2x" naming convention wasn't going to cause any problems. #svn
In SF on Monday, June 6th for WWDC? Come to the iOS Intelligence Party! iPad DJ Rana Sobhany will be performing. http://bit.ly/wwdc11party
Apperian is hosting a cool party at WWDC on Tuesday, June 7th. RSVP here: http://www.apperian.com/wwdc/
Who thought it was a good idea to schedule a technical conference during the Worldwide Drinking Contest? #WWDC
Apple Announces WWDC 2011 Keynote: http://df4.us/hpc
I'm starting to think that this year WWDC will be done dev camp style, with the schedule worked out ad-hoc over drinks the night before.
@atomicbird I make a point of never scheduling things like WWDC or SXSW. I find I have a much better time if I just go with the flow.
WWDC Tip: Bring a water bottle + some Emergen-C if you plan on drinking more than normal. Helps out tremendously the next day.
Registration for sfMacIndie is open! RSVP now for this WWDC kickoff party:

It's time to promise @Manton a beer at WWDC if you want @CoreInt episode 40 released in time for the flight!
Looks like we just got the WWDC Schedule and App: http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/
Really excited about some of these WWDC sessions. A lot of "things we all could do better" topics rather than header crawls.
WWDC Schedule is up with several "To Be Announced" slots. Now I remember why we like to schedule Mac/iOS Conferences after WWDC.
Gotta love the "holy shit it's WWDC on monday" feeling.
Radial shine on the iCloud icon puts me strongly in mind of the old iSync icon.
Core Intuition 40, the pre-WWDC 2011 episode on Twitter in iOS, syncing, and more: http://coreint.org/40
Gonna attempt to catch up on a few podcasts for the flight to WWDC. Also if you missed it yesterday, we released @coreint episode 40.
Steve Jobs to Google, RIM & MSFT today at #WWDC: I am altering the plan. Pray I don't alter it further.
Now live at WWDC: http://www.macworld.com/article/160229/2011/06/live_update.html
Jobs and Schiller jumped straight into discussing Lion. No recap of recent milestones. Interesting.
Finally inside. Hands frozen, can't type. #WWDC
How many Twitter references have there been so far? 2? 3? Foreshadowing is usually subtle. This isn't.
They're starting the Twitter hints early.
Lion-optimized apps with resume, autosave, etc. are going to be awesome.
Twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter twitter
Wow: Lion $30, only from Mac App Store.
200 million iOS devices sold to date. #WWDC
Swipe down for notifications -- Thank you Google Android! #wwdc
Didn't Apple get @rsarver's memo on building new clients?
Twitter OAuth more or less becomes a keychain-style service, it seems.
Single sign-on for Twitter. Suddenly really glad that @manton got Core Intuition 40 out before the show!
It looks like @manton and @danielpunkass were right about Apple's Twitter integration. #WWDC #wildguess?
Sign signon or twitter. Goodbye OAuth problems.
Oh and tweeting from photos links maps... Goodbye basic 3rd party clients #WWDC
Really, REALLY, excited to the @twitterapi + iOS integration get announced #wwdc
suddenly @twitter is an identity player at iPhone scale. Watch out Facebook as Apple integrates Twitter into the iOS 5. Huge move
So Apple had added a Twitter client, a news reading app, and a list app to iOS. There goes 60% of the App Store.
You fruit company bastards better not do a Markdown powered text editor too.
At least they're hitting a lot of other apps too. Could be worse.
The PC Free Icon: Because drawing umbilical cords is hard.
"This is starting to feel like that scene in the Godfather where all old business is taken care of in a single bloodbath." @jsnell live-blog
I'd feel bad for @phillryu but then I look at the Top Paid list.
again @snell: "SMS? That's ridiculous. Let's fix it." - this is classic Apple - find the thing that people love to use, and make it great.
This reminds me of that WWDC with the casket and funeral music.
Jobs: "Some people think the cloud is just a hard disk in the sky."
Demoting the Mac to being just another device. It's like Pluto all over again. #wwdc
iOS 5: Tweet everywhere http://t.co/5rSJlXb via @twitter
I think this is the bloodiest keynote I've ever seen. That being said biggest loser is Android not sure they can catch up now.
We're holding a Twitter and iOS Integration Workshop this Wednesday. More details and registration information - http://t.co/m2r2FnI
"All this file sync makes me think that Dropbox has been invited to a fishing trip at Lake Tahoe." - @jsnell
Apps can store documents in iCloud, pushed automatically when changed on any device. And iCloud Storage APIs. YES. #WWDC
Next new iCloud app: "Maybe my favorite one" - Photo Stream. #WWDC
Yeah, so I'm glad I didn't spend TOO much time working on sync last week.
This is what happens when you're no longer beholden to cables, carriers, and labels. #WWDC
I hope iCloud doesn't fail. I don't think I could weather the storm of awful wordplay to follow.
People complain that there's no new hardware. Did you see that North Carolina data center, people? It's FILLED with hardware.
No additional cost for downloading music to multiple devices via iTunes. Apple finally ends poverty in the First World.
As cool as iTunes match is, it faces the past. Isn't the $10 a month I spend on @Rdio a better value for heavy music purchasers?
They round the button in iOS, and square the button in Lion! What a country!
Sure, I miss Bertrand's "moo-ltiply" but Craig's "all-gorithms" are a nice consolation.
Today's big takeaway: in Apple's vision, the cloud makes native apps better. Others see the cloud as a substitute for native apps.
Wow, 150 questions in a few hours. Thanks everyone. I've archived at http://twtlib.com/ktmhan and will pull from there!
Just found out that Moneywell 2.0 is going to run on OS X 10.9 upwards only
RDF buzz kill. A large portion of your customers will not be able to run iOS 5.
I've gotten the scoop - this year's WWDC Bash band is The Goo Goo Dolls. Sorry.
[2009 - http://pbon.es/wwdc09 2010 - http://pbon.es/wwdc10]
Tweeting something cryptic about how awesome something I saw is, even no one outside this room will understand what I'm referring to! #wwdc
Play my favorite WWDC game at your next session: can the audience make it 15 full seconds without someone coughing? (A: No)
#wwdc Zoned out again and missed something. Need scrub bar in all sessions. Next year let's just meet, have parties and watch videos in pods
“You know, Daddy got to talk to Steve Jobs.”
"Did he get to talk to Odd Job? Because otherwise I really don’t care, I think."
Glorious day in San Francisco. Sun is shining. Excited developers as far as the eye can see.
Developers: there's a VERY good chance your app needs tweaks to work properly on iOS 5. Not fully backwards compatible. Test like crazy.
#WWDC speed test 5ms ping / 116.2Mbps down / 79.74Mbps up
Passing by the speaker room you can hear @drwave's sonorous voice wafting over the room as he works on his slides with the Duarté gnomes.
WWDC 2011 summary: Apple seems to have tackled nearly everything I hoped for. I can't remember when they seemed more attuned to dev needs.
WWDC is turning Presidio into a verb. As in, "I wanted to go to that session, but it was Presidioed, so I went elsewhere."
Macworld WWDC party food: http://twitpic.com/58i02v
Great to see apps of style and substance in equal measure getting rewarded this year. Congrats @pixelmator team.
Holy Shit. Did that just happen? http://img.ly/4Pln
"We picked Our Choice to win because there is *no UI*." - John Geleynse #WWDC #ADA
Huge congrats to @liscio and @bwalkin on the Apple Design Awards win for Capo. Great to see the audience react so well to the demo.
Apple: “well if the devs are going to use valueWithKey: to get these properties we might as well just make them public”
Devs: “THANK YOU”
Current Status: The View http://twitpic.com/58ka4d
The brilliant execution of Al Gore’s Our Choice earned it a coveted Apple Design Award. #WWDC #ADA http://tw.appstore.com/YsX
Congratulations to my old friend and colleague Mike Matas on his fourth Apple Design Award.
Great crop of ADA winners. Capo, Push Pop, Pixelmator, Djay, Chillingo—all worthy competitors!
If you're wondering: The blended Apple product was an Apple Pro Mouse. I was going to blend an iPhone 3G, but the battery worried me. #WWDC
This is the first WWDC where Apple is unequivocally not the underdog. Kind of thrilling. Kind of terrifying.
At the WWDC halfway point. Great conference and people. Hopeful about Twitter.framework (DMs, please?). Still thinking up uses for iCloud.
The days are falling by the wayside and still tons of folks I've not had the luxury of running into at WWDC.
@danielpunkass I just consider passing folks by on the elevator “hanging out with…”. Doing a lot of that with folks I know.
If you are attending WWDC and miss @drwave's talk at lunch today, it won't be because I neglected to tell you what a mistake that would be.
Yes, there are going to be lines for the next session, but it's kind of rude to leave en masse before the current talk ends. #wwdc
I wish Presidio had stadium style seating. #wwdc
With @manton in Presidio. Lunch accomplished, now ht kick back and wait for @drwave.
@danielpunkass @manton I asked the guys outside Presidio; they're clearing the room after the 11:30 session. You might not get back in.
126 slides. WWDC talk finally locked.
Will stop editing now...
@dwineman @manton WTF. So now we should leave if we want to get in? So lame.
@danielpunkass @dwineman @manton Makes sense to me, actually. Don't want all-day campers.
Achievement unlocked: WWDC talk is done, with 1 minute to spare on the clock!
With nothing to go on but between-session playlist, I'm going with Phoenix for the Bash.
As usual, @drwave gave an amazing presentation. Thanks for taking the time to educate and entertain us. #wwdc
New WWDC game take a drink everytime Xcode crashes on stage.
The star of every WWDC session that shows code samples: blocks.
The iCloud guy just made my job look way too easy with his 5 minute plain text editor demo.
Second time this week I've had to get a new hotel key card after holding it next to the iPad. Hey, magnets!
Part of me hopes that @PBones isn't full of shit. Part of me hopes he is.
Due to massive negative feedback, the band for tomorrow's WWDC Bash has been changed! Get ready to rock out with Michael Franti & Spearhead.
VIP room is called Destiny Lounge. On left side, downstairs.
If I haven't run App Cubby into the ground by WWDC 2012, I'm going to organize a party WITHOUT A DAMN BAND, DJ, OR ANY MUSIC AT ALL!
This may come as a shock to you, but there are drunk people here.
I'm so totally filing a radar for this: Maps app fails to locate my hotel when I'm drunk.
Fantastic party just wrapped up at Temple. Set a high new bar for WWDC parties, I think.
It seems like Apple has taken a tip from airline seating for #WWDC: seat rows seem closer together this year.
Feels like that was one hell of a party. Well done @brentsimmons and @ejoep
Every WWDC presenter: please don't say you'll "throw up a form" or "throw up a popover."
In keeping with recent years' #WWDC cheapness, tonight's bash entertainment will be a dance recital by Buzz Aldrin & Ashly DelGrosso-Costa.
The real killer of iTunes Match is this: pay $25 a year, and all that music you buy from Amazon/on CD/etc. gets the full iCloud treatment.
Second WWDC Hobby: When someone tries to hand you something on the street, crane your head, look at it quizzically, and walk away.

Sitting down for some out-of-this-world iOS information. Literally. #WWDC #presidio
Apple is good at looking out for its developers: http://t.co/Z1D8w9g
Sitting in Presidio waiting to either be pleasantly surprised or more likely disappointed.
Twitter's attitude to devs is represented well in their decision to reschedule the HQ meetup to precisely overlap the WWDC bash. Not cool.
@mledford @amrox Yeah, dunno the reasoning (Wednesday seemed perfect). Wish they weren't doing it at all.
So much care goes into WWDC. These Apple engineers are better presenters than a lot of marketing executives.
OK, Twitter isn't looking quite so bad. Migration in iOS 5 needs Oauth. Apple and Twitter are doing some really great stuff.
Twitter should have just waited until after this session to announce the forced use of Oauth. It sucks, but only temporarily.
@drbarnard agreed. Lots of great things coming out of the session.
Just saw oauth represented as a shit sandwich. #WWDC
@thekarladam I'm afraid you nailed it. Sigh.
Me, unfiltered. http://t.co/ekh8xbl
(I'm genuinely proud of how far my "Shit." has gone.)
Seriously, folks, stop getting up while a session is winding down. The presenters have earned our respect, so please have some. #wwdc
The fire trucks are not loud enough for my tastes.
Yeah, THIS just happened.
Breville. 1800 watts. Toast. BOOM!

@drbarnard Apparently no DM support through this... Manton asked. Useless to full clients as a whole solution I guess. :(
Pro tip for a good techie shirt: it shouldn't look like an ad.
These are the worst song titles ever. #WWDC http://twitpic.com/59ad29
My WWDC2012 suggestion: Moscone is labs-only on all levels, pre-tape sessions, local streaming of all session videos for attendees.
You guys remember a year ago when everyone was saying that the Mac is dead? #wwdc
At the WWDC Beer Bash, navigate via @chockenberry. He is our Polaris. #wwdctips
“@TUAW: Developers at #WWDC, come on by House of Shields after the bash tonight to meet some TUAW crew!” #tuaw
apparently twitter dms and sanbox appstore requirements are getting to me. i chewed off all my finger nails today.
I have it on good authority that the bands at tonight's beer bash are Sonic Death Monkey, Engelbert Humperdinck, Fiona Apple, and The Band.
So this is what standing in a typical WWDC line feels like...
Really loving The Palace hotel bar. Fun place!
@marcoarment I hear you were exaggerating the hostility of my question at the Twitter meetup. /cc @manton
@drbarnard @manton Sorry, not my intention. Just said that you asked about the recent developer relations stuff.
@marcoarment Somebody had to. @manton actually made it clear the exaggeration was his own, I was just giving you a hard time.
@marcoarment though I am curious as to your take on my delivery. /cc @manton
Thanks to everyone who came to the TUAW #wwdc meetup at House of Shields!
@drbarnard @marcoarment Whoops, was just kidding around. Though I am fascinated by different devs' interpretations: glass half full/empty.
It's been a great week. To all those I don't get to say goodbye to: thanks for the lulz, the code and the beers. See you soon.
Final day in San Francisco. What an incredible week it's been.
nice coverage @twittelator! How Apple Feeds Its Army of App Makers http://t.co/N0hTH9W via @BW HT @jasoncosta
Apparently you either love or hate Mel's, there is no in-between. http://yfrog.com/hskw7tkyj
If your voice starts to go, start drinking water and stfu. One silent night is better than missing most of the conversation. #wwdctips
To ensure no one breaks the NDA, we've given you all a cold specially designed to destroy your voices.
Feel fortunate to work on a platform where I can attend WWDC & hang out with amazing devs. Not only talented but genuinely good people.
I miss the free form feedback sessions and the Q/A post sessions. Got to imagine there is a ton of duplicate questions in the labs.
Apple did such a good job this WWDC listening to developers that I'll end up deleting more code than I write to take advantage of iOS 5.
Multi-thousand person line for a session on LLDB. Think about that. Would you ever stand in line for gdb? #wwdc #toolchainrockstars
Just been told I look a lot younger in the flesh. Based on how I look after a week at WWDC I can only say I must look 107 years old on video
If you're making the histrionic case that iOS 5 will put everybody out of business, you better be using Safari RSS as your newsreader.
My black jacket may not have a WWDC logo or a giant 11 but at least it has pockets.

The end of WWDC sneaks up on you. Full of doubts and regret, so it must have been a fine week.
Standing O for Buzz just for stepping on stage. He deserves it. #wwdc
Buzz totally showed the clip of him punching the guy in the face. Thunderous applause. Awesome
Buzz Aldrin and John Geylense @ Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) http://instagr.am/p/Ff3AY/
Despite all the lines and the sandwiches, the truly worst thing about #WWDC is that it ends. See you next year, everyone!!!
That's a wrap. Let's make some software.
As always, WWDC was an amazing week. Here are a few pics I took on my iPhone while rushing to and fro. http://campl.us/bq2V
